For STEM doctoral students at UCSD who have policy interests but are not in social science fields. I have advised several students in this program, and it has been useful for all of them.
Drawing applicants from UC San Diego’s STEM related programs, each year the School of Global Policy and Strategy (GPS) selects three doctoral students from across campus and pairs them with a GPS faculty advisor to explore the policy implications of their dissertation research.
Selected fellows are assigned a GPS faculty member with expertise in the relevant public policy sector. The advisors attend program events during the academic year with the fellow and are available for research consultation, meeting on average once a month. The outcome of the program is a public presentation on the policy implications of the fellow’s thesis research and could also include a publication co-authored with the GPS advisor, a submitted policy brief, or a new dissertation chapter. The fellowship is 1-2 years, depending on the project. Each fellow will receive $1,000 (per year) for policy-relevant research/travel expenses.
Fellows are required to attend the program’s four events:
- October orientation meeting to discuss research and each fellow’s program goals.
- Fall quarter Science-Policy Roundtable on a current topic being researched by UCSD faculty that combines science and policy.
- Winter quarter career panel discussion addressing aspects of the STEM-policy interface and how to establish a successful career in that space.
- Spring quarter public research presentations by the fellows.
Candidates must be a PhD student in a STEM field at UC San Diego.
Candidates must secure the approval of their departmental advisor.
